Swine Flu get the Facts

Fear can feed us the wrong food. Look what is happening in Egypt! The government slaughtered over 300,000 pigs just to be sure the swine flu was not being spread. The pig farmers are now at a loss as to how to support their families and resume their livelihoods. Swine Flu or sometimes called North American Flu is a combination of four viruses. One endemic to humans, two endemic to swine and one endemic to avian.

Here are some statistics about deaths in the world to put things in perspective!

Knowing that one person has died sounds so small but if that one person was my child one is too many. It is important to protect ourselves from getting sick. At the same time not becoming overwhelmed by all the media attention. We do not know what the full impact of swine flu. It has only just begun in North America, keeping in mind that flu season here is ending. The place we need to watch is the Southern hemisphere where flu season is just beginning.

Comments:
Many seemingly illogical actions by foreign nations come down to trust. Egypt simply does not trust the WHO nor the US. Slaughtering 300k pigs as a precaution is far easier and less expensive than treating a pandemic. Or quelling an uprising of angry sick citizens.

There are a couple deeper stories.

Viral mutation:
It will always occur - it's called evolution.. It's our ability to quickly identify and cure these illnesses that is important.

Communications gone wild.
The World Health Org's (WHO) job it is to over-react to potential pandemics. Better safe than sorry. Unfortunately, we also have an all to willing press who will sensationalize the anniverary of Andy Gibb.. a story with the world pandemic in it, is far too meaty to pass up.

Political Power
Unfortunately, the mistake lies within the communications dept of our Gov. They have known about "Swine Flu" far before it became common knowledge. These folks should have dictated the terminology being used to describe the problem at hand. If it were called Tijuana Fever do you think people would have been killing pigs?

Fear is a powerful motivator

For 60 years our nation runs economically strong and then within 30 days the Government deems that we are in the next depression? All because of one type of lending practice? Don't worry the Government will bail you out.

We have been told our retirement system will fail. SSI and Medicare; Don't worry the Government will bail us out.

We have been told our healthcare needs to be nationalized. Suddenly a major pandemic is striking.
Don't worry the Government will save us.

I'm not a big conspiracy person, but I do believe there Governments know how to manipulate their masses. The unaware and unconcerned are the best minions and this is the voting base in the U.S.

Is Swine Flu a potential pandemic? There's a world wide industry depending that it will be.

Thanks for your thoughts. All cause for pause. Why would we follow so willingly? It is human nature to wonder "What if" what if the next person is my child or my grandmother? We prepare for the worst and are thankful when it does not come! It is easier to follow than to lead and so we follow quietly into the night hoping who we follow will lead us where we want to go.
